Working to end the stigma and discrimination of mental illness.

Cheryl’s Story

My daughter came home pregnant when she was finally diagnosed with schizophrenia.  We became guardians, later adopting her first and now second son.

People ask me about raising my grandsons, and I tell them right out that their mother has a severe case of schizophrenia.  I tell them because she loves her children and that is the only reason she can't raise them herself. I want people to know its ok to talk about this disease, and to know people like my daughter are human, have feelings, and need to be understood, not judged. The more mental illness is talked about, and brought out of the dark, the easier it is for the mentally ill be to understood, and live better, safer lives.
